Communities

How do we create communities with equality, justice, safety, comfort, diversity, environmental sensitivity, and economic vibrancy?
Can sustainable communities actually exist, or is this contradictory to our growth and development model?

The curio project has made a conscious effort to think about buildings and their use in the larger context of where they are located - our communities.

In order to develop sustainable communities, we must think about where we site our homes and how we plan and use our land and natural resources, what transportation we use to travel from place to place, what food we eat and where we get it from, among many other issues.

In short, sustainability is about using our collective and unlimited mental resources, not our limited natural resources to create good quality of life for present and future generations.

Urban population densities have decreased in almost every major city in the world and sprawl development has increased. Inequality of wealth between rich and poor has widened.

Blighted and decaying urban settings and inefficient and wasteful suburbs, and neglected individuals and families has too often become the norm in American society.
